Dawn, the Key, and Buffy

topic posted Sun, September 5, 2004 - 9:45 AM by  Weezer
Here's what I don't get about season five and the whole Dawn thing. O.K. so Dawn is the key that will open Glory's hell dimension on earth. Her blood starts to open the portal, then Buffy jumps in to stop it. Why does Buffy's leap into the portal close it? I just don't get it . . . she sacrifices herself to save Dawn, that I understand. I just don't see why Buffy closes the gate while Dawn opens it. Could someone clear me up on this? Did I miss something somewhere?

spike said "is all about the blood" since the monks made dawn from buffy they share blood. blood opens it, blood closes it. plain and simple.

listen, mambutu, that's not plain and simple. No, wait... actually, it's quite simple. if by simple you mean dumb (in the stupid sense of the word). I think the point my buddy over here was trying to make is that dawn's blood opened the gateway a crack. In fact, glory would have liked nothing more than to have ALL of dawn's blood pour into that little gatecrack. This is the entire reason that we were trying to save dawn, remember? because froogin glory wanted to fargin kill dawn to open a gate to a hell dimension with HER BLOOD! lemme spell it out for ya... if dawn's blood opens the gate, and dawn's blood is made from buffy's blood, why should buffy's blood close it? didn't we learn this in season seven? remember the seal under principal wood's office? it wanted more and more blood, and buffy used andrew's tears of guilt to finally quench the hellfire. Every time it got more blood, it just got worse! Does this make sense yet? I, prsnlee, believe that joss realized the little sploof of season five's finale a little too late, but figured (correctly in my case) that people would be too moved by the idea of buffy's sacrifice to bother using their brain too much (which is what anyone who gets as nitpicky as us is doing anyway). All is forgiven though, as he made up for it in episode 7:16, the storyteller (the tears and the yadayada hellfire quench).

Actually...they specifically said, as long as the blood was STILL flowing, the portal would be open. Which is why Giles and Co. said if the portal was open, the only way to close it and make it stop would be when Dawn was dead. Buffy wouldn't kill Dawn just to make the portal go away. So once the blood started flowing, the portal way open. It needed the rest (i.e. Dawn to die) before it would close. This is when Buffy sacrificed herself, so that when SHE died, the portal closed.

Now...as for the Buffy/Dawn blood discussion:

They made Dawn from Buffy. Not Buffy and someone else. They took Buffy's blood (made her a sister) and created what Dawn. She was genetically the same as buffy, it would have been almost like having an identical twin, as they were genetically the same. They don't look exactly the same, which is what typically happens with twins though, so therein lies the flaw.

AHA! but you see... twins (the kind that would believably be played by two seperate nonbloodrelation actors) are born because two sperms get into one egg, and ARE therefore genetically different! If dawn was made from buffy's blood.... she would be a clone...

AND ANOTHER THING! even if buffy dies, that doesn't mean dawns blood will stop flowing!!!!???!?!?! WTF!!!

AND, YET AGAIN, ANOTHER THING! lets not argue. this is dumb. it was a good episode. if everyone can agree on that... we're gonna be okay. because that was the first episode of a television show that made me cry. sure, it was probly other events in my life leaking out because they had a chance... but still... it opened the floodgates and is therefore good quality tellyvision in my brain.

however... an interesting scenario entered into my brain just now...

now, don't get me wrong... I'm SOOO glad that michelle trachtenberg got that role, but.... *eyesparkle* IMAGINE!

oh... how awesome that would've been... if... instead of altering buffy's memory to make it so she thought she remembered having a sister her entire life... oh god... what if they made it so she thought that she had an IDENTICAL TWIN SISTER her entire life!!! there could be all KINDS of fun memories... pillow fights... that mudwrestling championship they had in the backyard... pillow fights... OOH and they could sleep in the same bed! eeeeeeyOWZAAAAHHHH!!!!!

MY question is, why was it *blood* that opened the thing, when the Key could have taken any of a bazillion different forms? For most of the story arc, Glory had no idea the monks had turned it into a living thing - how was she expecting to open the portal?

she wasn't expecting blood to open the portal, but the key, the essence of whatever it is... i'm sure if the key was an actual key, she'd have to grind it up and sprinkle it over the area of the portal. as oppose to the key being a person, the statement being made that blood is the essence of life, "it's what makes you hard... why do you think we eat it?"
